MEET DEANE

Architect and Former Maine

State Representative

Deane Rykerson grew up hiking and sailing in the Hudson River Valley, the son of an Ecuadorian mother and a father from Kansas. In high school, he played rock and roll, acted in the Croton Shakespeare Festival, and worked with the Youth for Civil Rights. He earned a history degree from Stony Brook University on a Regent’s scholarship, studied in Ireland, drove a NYC taxi, and supported the United Farm Workers.

After college, Deane traveled widely, working as a carpenter, sailor, and craftsman. He founded a woodworking business in the Berkshires and received a U.S. Department of Energy grant for a solar wood-drying kiln.

He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College and a Master of Design Studies from Harvard, becoming active in the Boston Society of Architects. After founding Rykerson Architecture, he moved to Kittery Point, Maine, where he designed his sustainable home and office.

Married to landscape designer Wendy Pomeroy, Deane has three adult children and enjoys sailing, hiking, and music. Elected to the Maine Legislature in 2012, he now serves as President of the Tide Mill Institute, treasurer of the Kittery Democrats, and board member of the York River Stewardship Committee and Isle au Haut Lighthouse Association.
